These elements are located directly below the lanthanide series in the periodic table. Like the lanthanides, the actinide series is named after the first element in the series, which is actinium. The elements in the actinide series are all highly radioactive. Therefore, any actinide elements that were present during the formation of the Earth have decayed; many actinides have a short half-life.
